Abstract

The aim of this study was to report the occurrence of diarrhea outbreak by Cyclospora cayetanensis inGeneral Salgado Municipality, SP, and the role of the Public Health Laboratory for its elucidation, andposterior monitoring of patients with diarrhea. At Regional Laboratory of Adolfo Lutz Institute in São Josédo Rio Preto - SP, during the period from August 1999 to December 2002, analyses of samples that camefrom General Salgado Municipality, SP were carried out. The following assays were performed: 103 waterpotability analyses, according to American Public Health Association guidelines; 130 coprocultures, including nine examinations for cholera, according to the technique described by Pessoa et al, 1983 andCholera’s National Commission Manual, 1992; 132 faeces parasitological examinations, includingopportunistic agents (by means of autofluorescence assay, alcohol - acid resistant staining by modifiedKinyoun technique, formol - ether sedimentation, sporulation by 2.5% potassium dichromate, and Hoffman technique), and 85 virus detection by means of EIARA (m) - Bio Manguinhos/FIOCRUZ, Rio de Janeiro -RJ. Of coproculture examinations, nine (6.9%) were positive for: Shigella boydii, Shigella sonnei,Escherichia coli, O11 and O128, Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Saintpaul, Salmonella Enteritidis,Salmonella Oranienburg, and Salmonella spp (non serotyped). From water samples analyses, 23 (22.3%)were positive for bacterias from coliform group, and 4 four samples (17.4%) were also positive for fecalcoliforms. Rotavirus antigen was detected in two (2.4%) fecal samples; and the occurrence of Cyclosporacayetanensis was observed in 16 (12.1%) samples. Owing to the investigation delineated for solving theinjury threatening the health of population from General Salgado Municipality, the first outbreak ofCyclospora cayetanensis in Brazil could be described.
