Notes on Meningococcus cultivation - II. Use of paraminobenzoic acid
Resumen
The authors aiming the cultivation of meningococci from cerebro-spinal meningitis and under treatment by the sulfonamides tried para-aminobenzoic acid in one of culture media employed, while a control, without the acid was employed. Out of 185 cases investigated, 100 were negative for bacterial growth. Amongst the 85 positive cases there was an advantage of 35,29% in favour of the media containing para-aminobenzoic acid, over the control. In view of such results the authors advise the use of that substance, considered by many as growth factor, in the routine culture media, in cases of suspected meningococcal cerebrospinal meningitis likely to be under treatment by the sulfamids.
