Abstract

The cosmetic products are defined as preparations consisted of natural or synthetic substances, for external use in the diverse parts of the human body, for cleaning, perfuming, modifying and/or correcting the corporal odors, and to keep the body in good condition. Due to these attributes, the cosmetic products have been daily used by millions of people, therefore, it is crucial to monitor the quality of these products. This study examined the documentation of 133 cosmetic products which were sent and analyzed at the National Institute of Control of Quality (INCQS) during the period from 2005 to 2009. Non-complying data on the physical-chemical, microbiological and toxicological parameters were found. The most unexpected report was related to the products labels, as in 94% of evaluated products the label was in disagreement with the Brazilian legislation in force.
